Book Blitz: Precious Things by Stephanie Parent - Playlist & Giveaway!

Precious Things by Stephanie Parent
Publication date: June 4th 2013
Genre: New Adult Contemporary
Synopsis:
Isabelle Andrews isn’t supposed to be here. She isn’t supposed to be a freshman at Hartford Community College, she isn't supposed to be living at home and working at her dad’s failing bakery, and she definitely isn’t supposed to be taking Intro to Electronic Music Production, a class that will get her nowhere toward her goal of an English Lit Ph.D. by age twenty-five. But when her dad’s latest business fiasco eats up her college fund, Hartford Community College is exactly where Isabelle finds herself—and thanks to her late enrollment, she doesn’t even get to choose her classes. Stuck with Electronic Music and way-too-easy English courses, Isabelle is determined to wallow in all the misery she feels entitled to.

But community college brings some unexpected benefits…like the fact that a certain overworked, over-scheduled Electronic Music professor hands over most of his duties to his teaching assistant. His tall, green-eyed, absolutely gorgeous teaching assistant. When TA Evan Strauss discovers Isabelle’s apathy toward electronic music—and, well, all music—he makes it his mission to convert her. The music Evan composes stirs something inside Isabelle, but she can’t get involved—after all, she’ll be transferring out as soon as possible.

Still, no matter how tightly Isabelle holds on to her misery, she finds it slipping away in the wake of all Hartford Community offers: new friendships, a surprisingly cool poetry professor, and most of all, Evan. But Evan’s dream of owning his own music studio is as impractical as Isabelle’s dad’s bakery, and when Evan makes a terrible decision, everything Isabelle has gained threatens to unravel. Soon Isabelle discovers that some of the most important lessons take place outside the classroom…and that in life, as in Evan’s favorite Depeche Mode song, the most precious things can be the hardest to hold on to

Precious Things Playlist

Precious Things features a lot of Depeche Mode songs in the story, and while most of them are named in the novel, a few are not, so I thought it might be helpful to put together an official Precious Things playlist!  I also have to admit that I am not much of a Depeche Mode fan—I really only started to listen to their music while I was thinking about this book, mulling over the idea of a story set around an electronic music production class.  (Like Isabelle, I also took an electronic music class at a community college; however, I was already a college graduate at the time and the class wasn’t for credit.)   Also like Isabelle, there are a lot of Depeche Mode songs I don’t like, but I have found a few that I really love, and the mood and tone of them had a huge influence on the writing of Precious Things.  So here are the songs, in the order they appear in the book:
1.       “Enjoy the Silence”—For the record, I hate this song almost as much as Isabelle does.  It’s one of Depeche Mode’s earlier hits.

2.       “Waiting for the Night”—This is the song Isabelle listens to after reading the Robert Frost poem “Acquainted with the Night,” and the combined effect of the song and poem prompts an unexpected emotional reaction.

3.       “I Want It All”—Evan plays this song for Isabelle the first time they’re alone together.  In other words, the almost-kiss sexual-tension song.

4.       “Halo”—The soundtrack to Evan and Isabelle’s first date.  The “girl with a famine in her heart” song.

5.       “Goodnight Lovers”—This song foreshadows some of the troubles Isabelle and Evan will face in the last part of the book.

6.       “Precious”—This one is my favorite too.

And if you want more Depeche Mode, here are some other songs that inspired me, but didn’t make it into the book: “Ghost,” “Useless,” “Stripped,” “One Caress,” “Suffer Well,” “The Things You Said,” and “Shine.”  Happy listening!

AUTHOR BIO

Elle Casey is a full-time writer of New Adult and Young Adult titles in several genres, including romance, urban fantasy, sci-fi dystopian, and action-adventure. She's an American girl who's been living in southern France with her husband and three children since 2010. She loves chatting with her readers, so feel free to drop her a line.

A Quick Q & A with Elle Casey

1. You started out writing in YA. What brought you over to New Adult?

I've been a reader of new adult titles even before they were called 'new adult'. And I love the age group it covers. 18-30 years old is such a great time in life, isn't it? I mean, it's when you sow your wild oats, learn about yourself in the context of the whole world and not just your family and friends; it's where you figure out who you're going to be. The adult-formative years I guess you could call it. And the sex part is awesome too, I won't lie. You can only get so sexy with a YA book, so as a writer, I have to hold back. In NA, I don't have to do that. It can be passionate, raw, sometimes awkward and full of bad decisions, but it can be REAL. I guess that's what I love about NA most … it's raw and real.

2. What's your favorite part of being a writer?

My readers. Hands down, it's the readers. I get emails and messages every day from devoted fans, and I can't express how much that means to me. There are readers out there who've set up book blogs just because they were so excited about my books, people who make it a point to promote my books on their Facebook pages and Twitter just because they want to share the reader-love, and whole families who are reading my series and discussing them at dinner. It just blows my mind that people would be so generous and so involved in my made-up worlds. Recently I had a fan dress as one of my characters at a comic con event. I also occasionally get a very heart-warming message about how my writing has changed someone's life - caused them to finally start reading or to go to college. To me, that's the sign of a life well-lived - that I've somehow inspired another person to reach for something they want in life that they thought they didn't have a chance at having before.

3. What's the most important element in a romance in your opinion?

A sexy guy. Seriously, he just needs to be sexy as hell, and that doesn't mean sexy can't come in different packages. For example, in the film My Big Fat Greek Wedding, the MC, Ian, is very understated and shy, but man, he rocked my world. He reminds me a lot of my husband, actually. On the other hand you have your angsty fighters ... guys who you'd never let into your world in real life but who are safe to fall for in books. Travis from Beautiful Disaster comes to mind. Boy, did he cause a lot of fuss in the reader world! Chemistry comes in all kinds of packages, which is awesome, but the chemistry has to be there or the book falls flat for me.

Purchase: Amazon
About the Author:

I was born in Chesapeake, Virginia on April 19th, 1979. I was raised within the American Indian religion and was taught great respect for the earth and all its living beings. Powwows, sweat lodges, vision quests, you name it, I’ve done it. I was the weird kid who would confront kids on the playground in elementary school when they squished a bug. I would very sincerely tell them what they were doing was morally wrong and then I would pray for the bug to come back as a butterfly in its next life.

I grew up admiring my father, Barry Weinstock, as an author. When I was twelve I started hand writing novels. My first one was two thousand pages. My daughter, who is thirteen, is currently working on her first novel. I hope to continue the legacy.

GUEST POST
"Creating the Gemini" by Jessica O'Gorek
For me, the idea of the Gemini just popped in my head. My inspiration spawned from my respect for the earth and my anger at our race for what we do to it. We take it for granted every day and I truly believe that one day it will catch up with us. It may not be in the form of paranormal forces, but we will make our environment uninhabitable and will probably be entirely our fault.

So I wanted to have mother earth so angry with our greed and our treatment of her (and each other) that she would create the ultimate weapon. I wanted them to be indestructible to everyone and almost impossible to kill or contain by humans. Somehow to me they became more like a plague, sweeping the earth and cleansing it of our presence. Onyx, who was an oil tycoon as a human, was born. But he had to have a weakness, a conscience; mother earth's one mistake. His weakness is Violette and the reason for this will not be revealed until well in to book 5. Although he is very dedicated to the cause of wiping us out he still has a moral compass and his fellow clan considers this a defect when in reality it's a gift.

Lilly, Onyx's sister, is obsessed with Mother Earth's cause and struggles deeply with her love for her brother verses her duty as a Gemini. Sometimes you love her and sometimes you hate her. Her softness is encrusted with hate towards the human race so thick that nothing will change her views. There is also a reason for her hatred, but this won't be revealed until book 6. (I think I'll get that far!)

Tork- strong, stubborn, set in his leadership role, he wants to pass the reigns to Onyx one day and let him lead the clan or train him to lead another clan. He is Onyx's father figure and helped him cross over from his human body into Gemini form back in 1956. His character is old and wise and he sees through Onyx most of the time but doesn't pressure him to tell the truth. Onyx respects him and fears him at the same time.

Just a bit about the Gemini characteristics: They appear to humans as misty beings, almost like human forms made of fog. Sometimes their aura will radiate color depending on their emotions but their eyes are the most hypnotizing features. Onyx's eyes swirl like a tornado of blue ocean. They can possess any living creature they choose and can control us by manipulating our central nervous system, our voices, everything. They are impossibly strong, invisible at will; their atoms can shift structure to allow them to go through walls, earth, anything they want. They can also form into plasma. Curious? Read the book to learn more about this powerhouse of a race that will challenge our existence!

Wow...the Gemini sound incredibly interesting, and it's fascinating that they came so easily to Jessica! I definitely agree that we as humans take advantage of the bounty that surrounds us...but I don't think about what kind of consequences could result very often. What about you?
Do you agree that humans' treatment towards each other and the world will lead to negative consequences? Do you ever think of what those consequences could be?
Have any other thoughts? Feel free to share them. :)

MY REVIEW
Wow! I still haven't read a lot of New Adult titles, but I'm definitely enjoying the ones I've been reading, and Fall From Love was no exception! I absolutely loved this book! :D

If I had to choose, my favourite part of Fall From Love would be the characters! They were all so fantastic...and even when they weren't in the greatest moods, I couldn't help loving them! I loved Holly and Charter...and boy did I want them to get together! I did enjoy all of their sexual tension though...and the chemistry between them once they finally started talking was fantastic! I also absolutely adored Jenna and Josh, both of their best friends! Jenna was the bestest best friend (yes that additional "bestest" was totally necessary), and I loved her for her pushiness when it came to Holly...and I also loved that she was always there and always tried to cheer Holly up! And Josh was just as awesome with Carter, and I loved him with Jenna...seriously the couples in this book were great!

While it took a while for Carter and Holly to get past the accident with her college sweetheart, I really enjoyed the way that Heather London developed their relationship. It was authentic, and it seemed so real! It wasn't rushed, and it honestly felt like their relationship built at the level that it would in real life, and I really appreciated how their situation could easily happen in everyday life. I also thought that their struggles with pushing their friendship into romantic territory were very realistic, and I thought it was handled perfectly...and while I was frustrated with both Holly and Carter at times for being afraid to make that final step, I completely understood where they were coming from, and it made me root for them even more! All in all though, I was one-hundred percent satisfied with how Fall From Love turned out! As mentioned, I loved the characters! I loved the authenticity of their relationship, and I absolutely loved the way that their romance developed! It was fantastic!

Overall, Fall From Love was a wonderful romance! It's full of characters that you want as your own friends, and that you'll be rooting for right until the very last word! I'd recommend it to fans of authentic romances with amazing characters! Also, if you enjoy seeing characters that have suffered finally get some happiness, I think you'll love this one. :D

About me (snooze—can you tell I hate the me stuff? Lol)

For as long as I can remember, I've had a good book in my hands. In primary school I loved Roald Dahl. In high school my English teacher introduced me to Charles Dickens, Stephen King, Jane Austin, Emily Bronte, and Shakespeare. It was then that I discovered my love for romance and I've wanted to pen my own imaginary heroes and heroines for others to enjoy ever since. Only in the last few years was I lucky enough to meet some fabulous and encouraging people to help me gain the skills to make that dream possible.

I live in sunny Scotland in a small town near the Ochils and work nine to five in a solicitors office. In my free time, you'll find me on Facebook, stalking *cough* following friends on Twitter, and may even catch me shoe shopping.

MY REVIEW
Sinfully Summer sounded like the perfect summer romance, and I definitely can't resist a good summer fling...so I jumped at the chance to read it, and I really enjoyed it! It wasn't quite as light, and breezy as I expected, but it was a wonderful story and Ric and Alexa's story was just what I needed during the bout of rain we've been having lately! It made me laugh, and it definitely made me smile!

The main characters, Ric and Alexa, had some seriously steamy chemistry, and while they constantly argued...I actually really enjoyed their back-and-forth bantering, especially when it got a bit heated. They also really complimented each other well. Ric had a really rough past and he needed Alexa's fun side to help him loosen up. I wasn't a fan of Ric always getting so angry with Alexa...but she pretty much got angry with him just as often. It may have had more to do with their unresolved sexual tension though because they didn't argue nearly as much later in the story.

I absolutely loved that Aimee Duffy chose to have both of the main characters' POVs in the story. It helped explain the characters' motivations, and allowed us to see just how hard it was for them to resist their attraction. It also allowed us to see that even when he was acting tough...Ric had a softer side. I also just loved Alexa, she was so spirited and feisty, and I loved her for it!

Overall, Sinfully Summer was a wonderful romance with two fantastic characters! They may have butted heads, and you might get a bit frustrated with them at times, but through it all, you will be cheering and just hoping that they get their happy ending...and you will absolutely love experiencing it all with them! I'd recommend Sinfully Summer to those who enjoy summer romances that aren't just flings...and also to those who love dark, mysterious (and slightly angry) leading men and feisty leading ladies!

EXCERPT

Adrenaline roared through her veins. This was her only chance. Pushing away from the wall, she rounded the lift, desperately seeking an escape. She barely noticed the plush furnishings, soft-looking leather sofas and floor to ceiling window which showcased the most spectacular view she’d ever seen. Instead she focused on the walls surrounding the elevator.

‘Are you lost?’

The heavily accented voice froze her to the spot. She darted a glance toward the sound. Dark brows furrowed over the richest coloured eyes she’d seen. His gaze swept over the length of her body, then up, lingering on her rear for a beat too long. Her skin tingled under his scrutiny.

Turning her whole body to face him, she slapped a hand on her hip. ‘Had a good enough look?’

His lips quirked in a sexy, lopsided grin. The jitters were back and Alexa swore the temperature in the room shot up ten degrees. Her gaze dropped to his broad shoulders, covered in a thin white t-shirt, then down to a well filled chest. She could see a dark pattern beneath the t-shirt. She longed to find out what kind of tattoo he had. Usually, tats didn’t do it for her. But on that body…

‘I could ask you the same thing.’

She snapped her attention back to his face. He stepped toward her, his jaw set, his eyes dancing with humour and something darker…something that made her blood heat and her mouth water.

Alexa raised her arm, palm out. ‘Hold it there, Mr. Any closer and I’ll scream.’

He paused by the sofa. Propping his hip against the cream leather, he folded his arms across his chest, causing the muscles to bulge. The moisture drained from her mouth and flooded in her belly.

‘No one’s here to hear you.’ He cocked a brow. ‘You seem to be forgetting where you are and,’ his gaze dipped down to her breasts causing the nipples to peak against the lacy fabric ‘how underdressed.’

Alexa thought this moment would have topped the blush scale. She planted her other hand on her hip and glared at him, unwilling to show any weakness. ‘I’m just leaving.’

She turned and strode back to the lift, keeping her back straight and trying not to wiggle her hips too much. The predatory sheen in his eyes made her body more jittery than the idea of sprinting around the lower floor in her underwear. She reached out to hit the button, but a large hand circled her wrist before she made it.

Alexa squeaked and darted back a step. He was so close, and his chest was right in her face. She could see the dark outline of the tattoo beneath the thin cotton. The outline of a burning sun, she thought, or something that looked like a sun. Her hands itched to lift the material and see for herself.

‘I’m up here.’

She snapped her gaze back up to his smirking face and took another step back. His lips kicked up at the corners and his eyes darkened. She swallowed against the urge to step closer, to feel his hard body pressed against hers. But she realised she was in little more than her bra and knickers in a stranger’s home. Unease skittered down her spine.

Alexa squared her shoulders, trying to quash the fear turning her heated blood into cold sludge. ‘I’m leaving now.’

‘After you explain what you’re doing in my home in your undergarments.’

‘Undergarments?’ Alexa pressed her lips together to keep a giggle at bay. ‘Seriously?’
